Celless Day Eleven

There is nothing wrong with our cell phones. If I get in the car and drive a mile or so out of town, my phone works just fine.

AT&T has been saying, for the past eleven days, that there’s a problem in the tower closest to our home and my office. So, there’s no signal here, where I need it most. Once a day, I travel to a nearby park to download all my texts and voice mails. I’m not accessing Flickr by phone these days.

I took this photo before my youngest son, Evan, left for a vacation in New Orleans. Evan had a brand-new phone that doesn’t work at home. Ironically, the problem started the day after he switched over to our family plan because his reception had been unreliable with Verizon.

Evan’s solution to the no-cell problem: walk down the tracks until you get a signal. And, visit your girlfriend in Louisiana.

The five cell phones (and their chargers) I’ve owned, assembled together one last time.

Except for the iPhone, all were "free" with a 2 year contract with Verizon.

The white lights/specs all over the place are, in fact, cell phones. It looked a lot better in person, but that’s what you get for leaving the good camera at home.

Tailgating cell-phone using not signalling at all weaving cock-face.

"I can drive like a cock because I have a Mercedes. I should be beaten to death with my cell phone and then have the thing rammed up my arse. Then I should be hung on a pole at the side of the road as an example of what happens to wastes of skin such as myself. Please please please shoot me before I kill other road users. Once, oh just once, wouldn’t it be great to see a Mercedes driver using signals, keeping a sensible distance from the driver in front, and just generally being considerate? Unfortunately that’s not me."

Strictly speaking, it’s not a bar code, but the 2-D equivalent, a QR code.

Most Japanese cell phones support Internet access—as long as you pay the monthly and per packet rates—and have built-in digital cameras, so providing QR codes saves typing in long URLs—http://tkbus.jp, in this case.

Guts of the Old School Cell Phone
Cell Phone

The guts of pt’s old-school style cell phone. Rotary dial, bell ringer, the whole bit. He did a giveaway where he gave out some schwag to the first person that managed to call the phone while he was on stage. Of course, once he gave out the number, the phone kept ringing, after he left the stage, and throughout the evening at the party. Beth, pt’s wife, even hinted at the phone ringing at 3:00 AM. ;-O

The Newton 2100 and Sony Librie are in the background.

I Hate My Wireless Phone Carrier Now
Cell Phone

First off, I’d like to give a very special Thank You! to the folks who have viewed my most recent pictures, especially the 11-photo series on my Ken R. jingle CDs. I figured it was a good plan, since I noted that no one else on Flickr has shared anything like that as of yet.

Thanks also for viewing some of my sketches. I’ll see if I can get back to it if things seem like they’re going to settle down soon. ^_^

And, now, why I’m not happy with my cell phone. I like it as a phone, I’m just not happy with the games that my wireless carrier is trying to play with in terms of flagging for "high data usage" when I don’t have an iPhone, or a Blackberry, or a Windows Mobile-powered SmartPhone, but I have 3G capability to view the wireless web, via the phone’s built-in browser or Opera Mini on the mobile Java application.

I’ve been doing what I’m doing for the last 5 or so months, and all of a sudden, for this bill, and I’m sure the next one, we’re getting hit with "data pay per use" charges, and getting nagged via text message and email about "high data usage" – Nothing has changed, and an unlimited data plan is supposed to be just that – unlimited. (Trust me, I don’t bandwidth whore as much as most folks…)

The honeymoon’s over, I’m going to make some calls to customer service, and if we can’t come to terms, I’m backing up all my contacts, pulling my mini-SD card, gathering up the phone and the gear that came with it, and I’m switching over to another carrier. (Prolly Sprint or T-Mobile. I’ll eat broken glass before switching to Verizon, though – I’ve got too many issues having worked for them for a while.)
