Description: Thomas Smillie was the Smithsonian’s first photographer and curator of photography. He and his studio staff were responsible for collecting and duplicating images brought back by scientists and curators traveling on business in other cities throughout the world, many of which often described the structures of other museums.
Creator/Photographer: Thomas Smillie
Birth Date: 1843
Death Date: 1917
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1843, Thomas William Smillie immigrated to the United States with his family when he five years old. After studying chemistry and medicine at Georgetown University, he took a job as a photographer at the Smithsonian Institution, where he stayed for nearly fifty years until his death in 1917. Smillie’s duties and accomplishments at the Smithsonian were vast: he documented important events and research trips, photographed the museum’s installations and specimens, created reproductions for use as printing illustrations, performed chemical experiments for Smithsonian scientific researchers, and later acted as the head and curator of the photography lab. Smillie’s documentation of each Smithsonian exhibition and installation resulted in an informal record of all of the institution’s art and artifacts. In 1913 Smillie mounted an exhibition on the history of photography to showcase the remarkable advancements that had been made in the field but which he feared had already been forgotten.

As more historians acknowledge the central significance of science and technology in the making of the first Industrial Revolution, the need for a good, general history of the achievements of the Scientific Revolution has grown. Scientific Culture and The Making of the Industrial West explains this historical process by looking at how and why scientific knowledge became such an integral part of the culture of Europe. Seeking to understand the cultural origins of the Industrial Revolution of the eighteenth century, this text first looks at the scientific culture of the seventeenth century, focusing not only on England but following through with a study of the history of science and technology in France, the Netherlands, and Germany. Comparative in structure, this text explains why England was so much more successful at this transition than its continental counterparts. It also integrates science with worldly concerns, focusing mainly on the entrepreneurs and engineers who possessed scientific insight and who were eager to profit from its advantages, demonstrating that during the mid-seventeenth century, British science was presented within an ideological framework that encouraged material prosperity. Readable summaries of the major scientific achievements are included to better communicate the central innovations of the period, and recent scholarship is added to help enhance the discussion of the integration of science into Western culture. Blending the history of science and technology with cultural history, this text is ideal for early modern European history courses, as well as for courses in cultural studies and the history of science.

Winner, 2009 Robert K. Merton Book Award given by the American Sociological Association Section on Science, Knowledge, and Technology.
In Alternative Pathways in Science and Industry, David Hess examines how social movements and other forms of activism affect innovation in science, technology, and industry. Synthesizing and extending work in social studies of science and technology, social movements, and globalization, Hess explores the interaction of grassroots environmental action and mainstream industry and offers a conceptual framework for understanding it.
Hess proposes a theory of scientific and technological change that considers the roles of both industry and consumers in setting the research agenda in science and technology, and identifies alternative pathways by which social movements can influence scientific and technological innovation. He analyzes four of these pathways: industrial opposition movements organized against targeted technologies (as in the campaign against nuclear energy); technology- and product-oriented movements, which press for alternatives (as does the organic food movement); localism, which promotes local ownership (as in “buy local” campaigns); and access pathways, which support a more equitable distribution of resources. Within each pathway, Hess examines reforms in five areas: agriculture, energy, waste and manufacturing, infrastructure, and finance. Hess’s theoretical argument and the empirical evidence he presents demonstrate the complex pattern of incorporation (of grassroots innovations) and transformation (of alternative ownership structures and the alternative products themselves) that has characterized the relationship of industry and activism. His analysis of alternative pathways to change suggests how economic organizations could shift to a more just and sustainable course.Winner, 2009 Robert K. Remote Working Kit Demo

You may remember that previously I did a sketch showing a design for a small office network for non-heavy applications. The setup would be ideal for say… an estate agency, but with a sufficiently powerful server or in an advanced network, serverS – the basic platform could be used by pretty much any level of organisation, even up to marketing and graphics design agencies running photoshop over a large thin client display.
This set of kit here is a neat demonstration of such a system in action on the remote end. The oblong device at the front is a 3 Mobile 3G hotspot or MiFi, the Huawei E586 to be exact. Connected to the internet over this device is an iPad for accessing the thin client desktop remotely, in this case running on a Mac OS X server in my home. Frankly, given that almost all desktop screens are now widescreen rather than 4:3, you’d likely be better off with an Android tablet or older linux ultraportable/netbook; at least in hardware.
Software side this is pretty easy. I’m running an iPad app called ‘iSSH’, which has the ability to connect to both VNC and RDP routed through a secure shell tunnel on my web/access server. This gives the ability to connect to pretty much any terminal server, whether Windows, Mac or other.
Finally, the top left gadget is a Vocera Communications Badge. The problem with carrying a large device like an iPad or thin client laptop is that it is impractically large for communicating by voice; although far superior than a smartphone for pretty much every other task. The Vocera Communications Badge serves as an example of a voice over IP handset that suddenly becomes a practical option for mobile communication. Using a VoIP phone makes it possible to directly route any calls from a public PBX number through to the wifi handset and vice versa, removing call costs for internal and IP traffic and allowing easy access to control who can and cannot get in touch. Vocera, as a wearable one-touch device serves as a particularly neat example of what becomes possible by embracing portable technology and self-hosted centralised servers. Users have efficient and up-to-date devices for data access and communications, management have reduced costs to equip staff and customers have quick and professional service with all data available within seconds whether walking into the office at 8:30am or meeting employees working on the move.

so I’ve settled into some sort of routine. I’ve added some gear, sent some back home, and even donated a few items to the country of india.
after this episode, I didn’t have any trouble remembering to bring a travel wallet and in fact I brought two travel wallets. I carry one of them around and keep the other one in my luggage. The latter contains a copy of my passport, an additional credit card, some cash, and accumulated receipts.
I brought two medium apple store plastic bags. these bags are actually double-lined plastic and very sturdy while being waterproof and dirty laundry proof.
when I decided to take a laptop to india, I looked into ways to secure it and purchased a pacsafe laptop safe, designed to fit inside a backpack. As an afterthought, since I was already on the website, I purchased their smaller safe for documents and other small items. The laptop safe I did away with after a few days and the small safe I love. I hang it on a wardrobe bar and cover it with a shirt or pants. Whether or not this truly offers protection, it gives me peace of mind. I don’t use the wimpy lock supplied; the master lock I brought separately.
the orange pouch attaches to my daypack/shoulder bag via carabiner and holds a high-tech ultra-thin microfiber towel that dries very quickly. I use this to dry off my face as most bathrooms do not offer amenities for this purpose.
headlamp is crucial.
spare earbuds and filters for my headphones.
Etymotic ER-4P headphones .
ipod USB cable.
Sony memorystick card reader attached to USB extension cable.
Sony vaio netbook laptop.
Reliance netconnect mobile broadband USB stick.
8 GB USB keydrive.
mobile phone, purchased in mumbai for with 550 rupees of airtime which I haven’t made a dent in. very useful. with charger.
80 GB ipod.
camera battery charger with spare battery.
outlet adaptor. I only use this for the camera battery charger.
earplugs. also crucial. india is noisy.
30% DEET.
Atovaquone/proguanil (Malarone) tablets for malaria treatment. Not taking malaria prophylaxis, will self-treat if I develop the symptoms.
Rifaximin (Xifaxan) tablets for prevention of traveller’s diarrhea. I take one 200 mg tablet twice per day.
epipen.
watch.

sleepsack. like a sleeping bag, but just a sheet.

Laptops, Netbooks or Tablets for Travelers? – as part of the expert series by GeoBeats. When you decide what kind of electronics to bring with you for traveling, first of all I can say that I bring a lot of electronics while traveling. So I typically have a laptop, camera, lenses, back-up drives. However for the average traveler I would say if you want to stay in touch with e-mail, surf the net, probably the best thing to do is to get a Netbook. They are cheap, so it does not bother you as much if maybe they get damaged or stolen, which can happen. But I would say the cheapness in the size really are a big advantage. The other thing to consider is, obviously you can check your e-mail and surf the internet on it and, you know, hook up to wireless connections but at the same time what the netbook has is a nice USB connection. So most travelers, most average travelers are probably going to take point and shoot camera, shoot pictures on the trip and they should download them. Hopefully that night, just, you know, because it provides back-up. And the best way to do that is through USB port for the most part. So that is probably why I would recommend a netbook for the best thing to bring as far as electronics for the average traveler.

What’s in the Box?
SkyCaddie SG5, AC charger, USB cable, belt clip
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: Can the SG5 give me the distance to the pin?
A: The SkyCaddie, using the IntelliGreen graphics found on our professionally recorded SkyCourses, provides more information than just the distance to the pin. Once the line of play is selected on the graphical green outline, it provides the minimum carry to get on the green, the maximum limit you have to the back of the green, plus you can adjust to obtain the third distance of the approximate flag location. All three distances are provided simultaneously from any direction as you approach the green. You can then frame your shot in a much larger target area and select the best club. You will hit more greens and have shorter putts than a single number can provide.

Tom Tom’s Navigator 6 software is designed for people who already own a PDA that supports Bluetooth, and don’t want to buy a separate Tom Tom navigator and GPS unit. This package provides a Bluetooth receiver to give your PDA GPS functionality, and all the Navigator 6 software with maps of the complete US and Canada on a DVD, which once installed on your PDA will let you know not only where you are going, but exactly how best to get there.
The Tom Tom Navigator 6 software is not only effortless to install, but easy to use with a touch-screen user menu that gives you an intuitive navigation experience, and an inherent portability that lets you take it with you anywhere, whether in your car, on your bike, or on foot. The Tom Tom Navigator 6 software has complete maps of the United States, including Hawaii, Alaska and Puerto Rico, as well as all the Canadian provinces. This software gives you the convenience of thousands of pre-installed Points of Interest from restaurants to gas stations, allowing you to search by proximity to your current location, along your route, near a specific city and more, as well as letting you plan your route to fit your requirements, be they quickest, shortest, avoiding toll roads, or many others.
Navigator 6 not only guides you from door to door, but can navigate directly to contacts from your PDA address book, complete with stopovers and itinerary planning for routing to multiple destinations while adding stopping points. The user-friendly interface features a tip system for when you are just getting started, an optional compass display, and the ability to show a route demonstration so you can better know what things are going to look like in advance.
Tom Tom’s Navigator 6 system provides you with crystal clear 2D or 3D graphics, in a brilliant 65,000 colors and “Nightview” for optimized visibility. This navigation system includes realistic visual instructions that replicate road signs to make them easier to follow, and a pedestrian-centric map option that lets you view your position with a fixed position in 2D that can be zoomed in and out for better orientation when you are navigating on foot. Navigator 6 features friendly north-up navigation for easier orientation, automatic route recalculation if a user takes a wrong turn, and auto-scaling software so it will fit any PDA screen. Suitable for almost anybody, the user interface application comes with support for some 22 languages covering virtually all of Europe from Turkish to Flemish, Lithuanian to Catalan, while the spoken directions come in 37 different languages that include with the European languages such options as Chinese, Thai, Japanese and more.
Full of smart extras and additional options, the Tom Tom Navigator 6 system includes Tom Tom Home software to manage all the files on your device, get new updates on your PC or Mac in advance, and more, as well as supporting a wide range of Tom Tom Plus services and downloads. Tom Tom Plus lets you receive real-time, up-to-the-minute traffic information, with jam alerts and road condition warnings, as well as use instant messaging and more to keep in touch with a selected group of people, including tracking their location. Tom Tom Plus is an optional, cost-based service that can be accessed through Navigator 6 at any time.
The receiver that is included in the Tom Tom Navigator 6 package utilizes Bluetooth technology to eliminate the need for connecting cables, and a high-performance GPS antenna to ensure the best possible reception wherever you might happen to go. Ideal for urban environments, the GPS antenna on this unit will stay connected to make sure you find your way whether you are driving down the road or walking down the street, and because of its Bluetooth connectivity, and its small size and light weight, this handy receiver can fit easily in a pocket, purse, or anywhere else out of the way.

The Tom Tom Navigator 6 software and GPS receiver package is compatible with most popular brands and models of PDAs, including; Acer, Dell, Eten, Fujitsu Siemens (compatible with software, not receiver), HP, Imate, O2, Orange, Palm Treo, Qtek, T-Mobile, and Nokia.
